The January meeting of the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild was "zipping into the New Year," and here's what we did - little zippered pouches!

In addition to bring a variety of their zippered projects, Rachel (right) gave a short and amusing history of zippers and then Eileen provided us with some basic directions.

This meeting was so well attended that we ran out of chairs as evidenced by Sarah, Mimi (sitting in a kiddie chair), and Erika.

The International Quilt Festival is hosting a special exhibition of modern quilts in 2012. What an exciting opportunity! See the excerpt below about submissions and click here for all the details: http://callforentriesmodernquilts.com/----------------------------We would like to invite members from any of the Modern Quilt Guilds around the world to be considered for inclusion in the new exhibit.You may submit a total of two (2) quilts for our consideration. We require that quilts be at least 36” on each side. There is no maximum size limit. There is no "made after" date requirement.Completed submissions with visuals must be received online by Friday, March 2, 2012. You will be notified no later than Friday, March 30, 2012, regarding the quilts to be included in this exhibit along with shipping instructions. If selected, the quilts will need to arrive in Houston no later than Friday, September 7, 2012. Quilts will be returned by the end of December 2012 if the quilt does not travel, or arrangements may be made to have a quilt picked up at the conclusion of the show. If you agree to allow your quilt to travel (assuming the exhibit is chosen to travel to other shows), your quilt will be returned by the end of August 2013.

Robbi Eklow presented her quilts at the September meeting. Robbi shared many beautiful quilts with us and talked about her design and fabric dieing process. It was amazing to see the detail and color of her quilts in person.

Sewing machine (walking foot/dual action feed works best)
Neutral thread
Per bag - Two 18” x 20” rectangles for outer bag
Two 18” x 20” rectangles for lining

(We'll also need irons and ironing surfaces!)

What will be provided:

Strapping fabric for the bag handles (3 sets per member)
18” x 20” rectangles from the Sale Table fabrics
Directions for making bags

Bring enough fabrics to make at least two bags – one to give away and one to keep!

Bring something for Show and Tell.

And bring something for the Sale Table, including your money to spend!

Our Sunday afternnoon monthly meeting, after an hour of Show and Tells and a presentation of a baby quilt to our new mama president Beth, was devoted to Quilted Postcards and a huge success, thanks to member Sue Ryan. She provided us with the basic supplies and primed our creative pumps. And then we were off and creating. Here's just a handful of what we did. Sue did warn us that these little postcards are addictive. I fear she's right. Thanks, Erika, for the picture!

And now for something completely different…

So many of us had never done mug rugs before the informal exchange suggested by Ebony. Did you see the table of them at the meeting on July 17? If you missed seeing them, check out the Flickr display on the blog and in the CMQG Flickr site. Every one said how much fun they were to make, to give, and to receive. What a great activity.

And now here’s another opportunity to try something new. The August 21 meeting will be a sew-in/tutorial led by Sue doing quilted postcards. Here’s what you can do before the meeting. Google quilted postcards and be prepared to be awed at what you see. Here are two places worth looking at.

Finally, those of you participating in the Applique Round Robin, bring in your assigned piece and be ready for the next round!

July 17 Meeting

It’s a sew-in! Here are some possibilities for the afternoon. You can do some, all, or none of these.

1. Bring a bra and embellish/decorate it for the 2011 Show Your Support Challenge. The entry fee is $5 and all proceeds go to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

CMQG'ers Learn to Applique!

Sunday, June 12, the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild focused on applique techniques. Sue showed us "dryer sheet" applique, Sarah E demonstrated English paper piecing, Donna talked about raw-edge, fusible applique, and Terri focused on practical ways to label quilts. Members rotated to the four different stations after an inspiring "show and tell." Check our Flickr site for pictures. As these pictures show, applique was not a new techique for many of our members!

A big thank you to Paper Pieces in Sycamore, IL, for supplying us with hexagon templates for Sara's sessions!

Another thank you to Saral Paper Corporation for their samples of wax-free transfer paper, which Terri used.

At the July 17 meeting, you'll have a chance to show off one of these applique techniques. Details will be coming. Meanwhile, think 8" block!

June 12 Meeting

June's meeting is focused on mostly applique techniques and will involve a series of 4 demonstration/discussions that members will rotate to: raw edge applique, dryer-sheet applique, English paper piecing, and methods for labeling quilts. Be prepared to have fun. And if you have any quilt or projects involving any applique method, please bring them in for the Show and Tell portion of the meeting!

The International Quilt Festival

Was it just me or did anyone else miss the International Quilt Festival this year? Instead of Chicago, the International Quilt Festival was held in Cincinnati this year - and will be there next year, too - April 13 - 15, 2012.

I probably wouldn't have thought that much about the International Quilt Festival except fellow blogger Andrea Johnson of the Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild posted two marvelous entries that really made me sad Chicago has lost this festival. However, Andie's entries made me feel as if (almost) I was actually there. Here's Part I of Andie's coverage. And Part II.

Need some eye candy? Andie provides it! She even settles the question of whether the Quilt Police actually exist. And she also has some great tutorials in her blog!

Project Modern Challenge 3: Organic

Quilt Shop Recommendations

We have created a google map of quilt shops in the Chicagoland area with the hopes of pooling the experience and opinions of Guild members on the pros and cons of quilt shops around Chicago. This google map is entirely open for edits. We started the map with quilt shops recommended by guild members in forums from the old ning site. It would be great if you could take a look at the map and add any opinions or reviews you have about quilt shops you've visited.

When you first go to the map, you'll see an option in the top left to "Save to my maps". If you do this then you can edit the map and dd new shops to the map, also this map will always be saved in your google maps for your review. If you have a google account already, this just takes one click. See the screen shot below.

If you don't google will ask you to sign up for a free account which just involves giving Google your email address, making a google account password, and providing your birthday and country. Once you have an account you can save this map to your maps.

Once you've saved the "Quilt shops around Chicago" map to your maps, you can edit the shop reviews. In order to edit an entry, you just click on the "Edit" button in the top left of the screen - see the screen shot below.

If there's a shop that should be on this map that isn't, please feel free to add it and give it a review. To add a shop to this map, you search for the shop in google maps - which will take you away from our group map, click on the shop, and then click on "Save to". This opens a drop box of all of your saved maps, select the "Quilt shops around Chicago" tab and that will add it to the group map. See screen shot below for clarification.

I've tried to add the name of the reviewer and any pertinent information about hours open. I hope you'll find these recommendations for quilt shops as useful as I have and that we can build an even better set of reviews and information on local quilt shops in the future!

Iron Quilter? A HUGE SUCCESS!

What a fun afternoon. Here's what happens when teams of quilters are given fabrics and embellishments they must use to create a bound quilt whose dimensions are at least 15".

Thee five pieces were judged by the quilters for their favorite and by the judges for best use of embellishment. This quilt, #4, was the People's Choice.

And this was its team of creators - Holly, Michelle, Terri, and Eileen.

It's always interesting to see what machines people bring for sewing competitions and sew-in. Above and below represents a 60-year difference in sewing machine - Karen with a modern one and Erike with her Singer Featherweight.

Ebony was the mastermind of this event, and it's a keeper. She, president Beth, and treasurer Jen organized the bags of fabrics, embellishments, and batting each team received. Ebony and Jen then judged the five entries.

Here's the "winning" piece with its team - Erika, Sarah, Donna, and Rachel.

First Guild Retreat

The first guild retreat was an amazing weekend of sewing, chatting, building friendships, and fun. Fifteen guild members retreated together to the Siena Center in Racine Wisconsin which was such a lovely place; everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We're determined to go back soon.

We took short breaks to learn new skills from each other with ten minute tips.
Ebony's demonstrating her phenomenal method of machine binding in the picture above.

We all got a lot done over the sewing weekend, the pictures below showcase some of the projects that we worked on.

Here's a piece of Yolande's project with pieced cornerstones. She has a LOT of tiny yoyos that she'll be attaching to the yellow squares of this quilt. Can't wait to see it all put together!

blue baby quilt she pieced this weekend.

Holly has a bunch of beautiful fabrics pieced in to flying geese blocks. She also made the

gorgeous scarf she's wearing in this photo (although not at the retreat).

Eileen is working on a striped quilt with really gorgeous, rich colors.
She also made these adorable spaceship / robot pillowcases for her two boys. Rock Star Mom!

Donna, the guild's new Vice President displays some gorgeous, funky pieced blocks from scraps of reds in her stash. She also started on her first Drunkard's path after a little alone time with Mr. T.!

Here's Ebony, probably our most productive participant, displaying the only project that's approved for public viewing, a cathedral windows project with some gorgeous turquoise stitching along the seams. She also worked on a project she's hoping to submit to a magazine and another for a children's book. Go Ebony!

Michele worked on mirroring techniques with these blocks. She also completed a beautiful purple and green quilt - I believe it was a drunkard's path.

Emily created this gorgeous wonky star baby quilt in soft, sweet colors. She also gave a great tutorial on teeny, tiny wonky stars that finish at just one inch.

Here's Debbi with a lovely fiber art project she completed over the weekend.

Sue's project of fun, unpredictable strip piecing turned out simply stunning.

Beth, the new guild president, is working on a lovely king size quilt using a ten inch Moda layer cake. A lot of the blocks came together this weekend, and we laid it all out to get an idea of how many are left. This will have brown stripes running vertically between the blocks and white stripes running horizontally. Gorgeous!

Emily made two beautiful cross banners for her church over the weekend. She also finished up a really fun quilt of her own design that reminds me a bit of lightning bolts.

Freida worked most of the weekend on a variety of cathedral windows
projects using all kinds of great fabrics.

I don't know about everyone else, but I can't wait for the next retreat at the Siena Center. I had so much fun sewing and getting projects moving along, but I had even more fun chatting and getting to know everyone better. What an amazing group of crafters!

Have you see us on Facebook? Seach for Chicago Modern Quilt Guild and "like" us - then you will automatically get the Facebook feeds.

Are you aware of how many members of the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild keep blogs? Scroll down and look at the right of this page - they are all listed there. Are you a quilt blogger and not included? Let someone at the next meeting know - you just have to be a dues-paying member of the CMQG and a blogger and you're IN!.

But the best place for all information about the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild is BigTent. It's the place for information about meetings and lets you RSVP to meetings. There's a listing of all those who log onto BigTent and are interested in Chicago Modern Quilt Guild. There are forums for various discussions. Minutes from previous meetings are posted. Look for announcements about upcoming retreats (and just a word of warning - spaces will be limited and they will go fast). And best of all it's a way to get to know the people who are a part of CMQG.

Meet the Members - Donna

1. Tell us about you

I'm a retired HS English teacher. I've been quilting since 1985 and am becoming increasingly passionate about what I do. I maintain a website - moquilt.com - and a blog - moquilt.blogspot.com

2. When/How did you get into quilting?

I was lucky to grow up in a house where my mom used a sewing machine and encouraged my use of it. But I didn't begin to quilt until 1985 - an article in a Woman's Day magazine by Eleanor Burns started it all. It was her "Trip Around the World" pattern, and I was sucked in.

3. Show us a couple of your projects

My blog is a great showcase of both finished and in process pieces. Although I do primarily quilts, I have also worked with jackets and purses. One of my specialties is memory quilts, many of which are "life celebration" quilts.

4. What other activities, crafty or not, do you enjoy? I'm an avid reader and an avid traveler - Europe, Turkey, Southeast Asia, India. I'm missing the January meeting of the CMQG because we'll be in Kenya. For the past two years I've also been a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society.

5. What quilt or item you've made are you most proud of and why? This is almost like asking a mom which child is her favorite. I have a quilted jacket that I've been wearing for years, I love the latest Moonscapes because I finally used free-motion quilting in conjunction with raw-edge applique, I love some of the quilted totes I've made, and I'm thrilled I paper-pieced a Mariner's Compass.

6. Who inspires you most in your quilting?

1st, Eleanor Burns was my first inspiration - her books are written for the self-taught quilter. 2nd, Alex Anderson's HGTV series also had a big impact on me. 3rd, my quilter buddy Wayne (waynesquilts.blogspot.com) is a daily confidant and constant source of inspiration - we met at the Glencoe Fiber Arts Show. 4th and last, the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild - from the moment I walked into the first meeting, my quilting wheels began to churn in a different way.

Project Quilting Season 2

Season 2 of Project Quilting has begun over at Kim's Crafty Apple. Guild members Ebony and Karen participated last season. They not only created some fabulous projects and won some prizes, but had a great time stretching their creativity.

Check out Kim's blog for all the rules. The first challenge is Primary Colors and is due January 16th.

Project Modern Challenge 2: Monochromatic

The Modern Quilt Guild has posted the second challenge: create a monochromatic quilt. Here are the official rules from their site:

The Rules & Details:
- All quilts must be 45” x 45” or larger
- Limit of one submission per person, per challenge
- To enter your submission for Challenge 2 please email the following to projectmoderncontest@gmail.com.
1. Two photos of your quilt, a wide shot and a detail shot
2. A brief write up (one or two paragraphs is fine) explaining your quilt and how you took on the challenge
3. Your mailing address
4. Your blog address (if you have one)
5. Your flickr user name (if you have one)

- All entries for Challenge 2 must be received by March 31, 2011.
- The winners of Challenge 2 will be announced on or about April 15, 2011.
- US residents only are eligible for the prizes.

Thanks to Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr for a FANTASTIC presentation Sunday. They couldn't be friendlier and more open. It was inspirational to hear them talk about their design process and the evolution of their quilt designs. It is clear that they complement each other in so many ways. Something admirable, to be sure.

And the QUILTS! I think they brought everything in their studio over for us to fondle, including ALL the quilts from the new book, Quilts Made Modern. Pop over to Kate's blog for some great pics of the day.

Meet the Members--Jessica

1. Tell us about you
I'm Jessica and I'm a lifelong Chicagoan. I grew up in River Forest and now live in Libertyville with my husband and almost-four-year-old son. I was a seventh-grade teacher before he was born, but am now home with him full time.

2. When/How did you get into quilting?

I can remember being interested in quilting in middle school--I had a learn-to-quilt book and bought fabric for a sampler quilt, but with no rotary cutter, things didn't quite work out as planned! I really learned to sew in high school, but took a decade-or-so hiatus, until I I stumbled upon the craft blog world after my son was born.

3. Show us a couple of your projects

I've been looking at quilts longer than I've been making them, and so have only completed a few quilts.

My first quilt was for a friend's baby; I had another design in mind, but then she came three weeks early!

I made this quilt as an auction item for my son's preschool, which names its classrooms for colors--so all the fabrics are either green, yellow, or blue. They're adding an orange room next year--not sure how that would've fit in!

This quilt was another charity donation, with a simple design where the Kaffe Fasset fabrics could speak for themselves. I was the event chair, and so I didn't have a ton of time!

4. What (if any) other crafty activities do you enjoy?

After my son was born, I learned to knit, and still enjoy that...I like a lot of other crafts in theory, but I have enough fabric and yarn to keep me busy for a lifetime without adding other supplies to the mix! I do enjoy crafting to make something I need rather than buying it--I made some fabric-y magnets for a swap, and got to try pouring resin, which was fun. Not something I want to turn into another hobby, but I do really just love the process of making things, so it was neat to do once.

5. What quilt or item you've made are you most proud of and why?

I think I'm most proud of that first baby quilt I made...mostly because it was the first time I'd executed the process I'd been reading so much about...I was so delighted to have actually made a quilt. I also just love the colors--so cheery and perfect for a baby girl--and was pleased with how my attempt at mixing fabric lines turned out; I prefer the look of quilts that draw from lots of different designers, but am always a little nervous to combine lines myself. I didn't mix things up too much in this quilt, but what little I did worked pretty well, I think.

6. Who inspires you most in your quilting?

Bloggers and "flickrers", most definitely. It's kind of a double-edged sword, because I'm sometimes a little hard on myself about my own work when I start comparing it to the volume of awesome quilts I see online on blogs like Oh, Fransson and Film in the Fridge. I try to remind myself that in this season of my life, crafting is something I do in found bits of time. Cranking out a quilt in a week just isn't realistic for me right now! That said, I really love getting a sneak peek at such high-quality work from people I've never met in person. I have learned so much about design and color and just taking chances in my work from the blogs I read.

Pillowcases Ready to be Delivered

Sara, Ebony and I pressed and packaged all the pillowcases last week. I never ironed so much in my life. Between what was sewn at our June meeting, a small stack that Sara and I brought, and some others that had been sent by guild members to Ebony, we pressed and folded and baggged . . .

Meet the Members--Mary P, President

1. Tell us about you
I grew up in San Jose, CA but have lived in Providence, RI and Boston, MA before coming to Chicago four years ago. I am a software consultant at Heller Consulting for fundraising software that nonprofits use (Raiser's Edge and Common Ground). I also teach swing dance at Big City Swing (sometimes). I have a wonderful husband James and we live on Chicago's north side.

2. When/How did you get into quilting?
My mom "forced" me to learn when I was 10. She was learning at the same time, from a family friend. My (older) sister did a double Irish chain, where I did a simple four-patch. I made a few quilts in high school, a few in college and the years afterward, but I really took off in the last two years. I think it has helped a lot that my machine is always out, so it is really easy for me to just sit down and sew. I'm moving to a new apartment next month, and I'll have a whole room for sewing, which makes me very excited!

3. Show us a couple of your projects
This is a baby quilt I made for my friend's baby boy. It was the first time I ever did anything "liberated" and it was really fun. It was nice to start with something small and relatively safe.

This was a large quilt I made for my friend's wedding. I don't normally work in these colors, so it was a good stretch for me. I really love how it turned out and it matches their home perfectly!

I had it professionally quilted, because there was no way I could get such perfect concentric circles!

This was a quick baby quilt I made for a friend's little girl. I have been wanting to work more in solids--I feel like they are quite neglected in my fabric stash, so I really wanted to challenge myself here. I love how it turned out.

4. What (if any) other crafty activities do you enjoy?
I don't know if cooking counts, but I love to cook, and so does James, so we have a lot of fun with that. And, as I mentioned, we teach swing dance. I find all of my hobbies to be very creative outlets.

5. What quilt or item you've made are you most proud of and why? This is a really hard one. I have so many quilts I really love. I'm going to say this one I made for my friend Sara. It was a lot of pieces, but the quilting was the first time I had ever done anything so large that I did free motion. It was quite a beast and I only did it a few months after my first free motion quilting project.

The back I completely free-pieced, which was really fun to figure out how to use up lots of small scraps.

6. Who inspires you most in your quilting?
Why, the folks from CMQG, of course!!! I get a lot of inspiration from our group. There are so many talented members. I follow a lot of blogs, and I really love Gwen Marston's "Liberated Quiltmaking" books. I'm planning to go to her retreat in early October with my mom, where I am sure I'll get a ton of inspiration. I also really love anything by the folks at FunQuilts (Bill Kerr and Weeks Ringle). I'm hoping that we can bring them in for a workshop, seeing as they are in Oak Park and wouldn't have to travel.

Meet the Members--Beth K, Vice President

1. Tell us about you

Hi! My name is Beth. I spend my days working with middle school students, teachers and families as an administrator. I love working with data and curriculum and am able to do a lot of that kind of work for my district in addition to working with kids. I think the combination of detail work and creativity are things that appeal to me in both my work and in quilting. I’ve been married for 14 years to my wonderful husband and we have two dogs, Milo and Quincy.

2. When/How did you get into quilting?

I come from a family of quilters. My great-grandmother, Mama Pat, was known for her quilts. She made one for each of her 15 children as well as her grandchildren. That’s a lot of quilts! They weren’t fancy quilts, but they were made with care and were meant to be loved and used. I am fortunate to have received one and my mom now has several others in addition to the one that was made for her. Mine is a bow tie pattern. The others include a maple leaf and a grandmother’s flower garden, which was on my bed when I was little. I spent hours looking at all the fabrics and can picture them now when I close my eyes. I plan on wrestling my sister for them if I have to when my mom is ready to pass them on.

My grandmother quilted, too, although she was more of a “fancy quilter” than Mama Pat. My mom wasn’t a huge quilter, but she made my sister and me Christmas quilts one year, personalized with our names.

I started quilting when I was preparing to leave for college. My mom helped me select a pattern and we went off to Ohio’s Amish country, near where we lived, to pick fabrics. We cut rectangle after rectangle, then pieced. Mom cleared out the dining room and we set up my grandmother’s quilting frame and called everyone in to help. My two grandmothers, my best friend, my mom and I, and even my sister, who was in 6^th grade at the time, helped hand quilt my college quilt. I started another queen sized quilt in my sophomore year, but didn’t finish it until just a couple of years ago: 3 states and 4 moves later. I really started quilting again when my friends started having babies, following my mom’s and great grandmother’s tradition of gifting a new baby with a quilt. Now that we’re done with the first and second rounds for most of them, I’m trying to focus more on quilts I actually get to keep, as well as a seasonal series for my mom – autumn and winter already done – and charity quilts for Shriners’ Hospital, Project Linus, and other charity projects here and there.

3. Show us a couple of your projects

One of my favorite baby quilts – Jack and the Beanstalk. My husband drew the pattern for me full size based on some children’s books and other reference I gave him. I then hand appliquéd and embroidered the top. This was our second quilt we designed together – the first was the Princess and the Pea – and the third fairy tale/nursery rhyme themed quilt.

This was a baby quilt from the Modern Quilt Workshop for a friend’s granddaughter. I started out with a totally different color scheme in mind. It’s a reminder to be flexible and if the fabrics aren’t working, switch it up and try something else. Once I changed to these bright batiks, everything fell into place and I loved it.

The last one was selected by my husband, LBK, who wanted a quilt for his chair. He selected both the pattern, Jelly Roll Diamonds by Fig Tree Quilts and the jelly roll. I should have set some criteria first, because those diamonds were challenging! Definitely a labor of love. Eventually, I finished it and quilted it lightly by hand. Machine quilting seemed to heavy for it.

4. What (if any) other crafty activites do you enjoy?

I like to try new things and new techniques, sewing and otherwise. I’m currently trying to track down some transfer sheets for a thermofax to try some screenprinting. I use my scrapbooking supplies more for decorating presents and the like than actually scrapbooking, although I have completed a few mini-books. I am trying to get back into apparel sewing but find it challenging. Quilts, like purses and shoes, always fit well. I garden some.

Most significantly, I like to cook, bake, drink and eat. I spend time on several food forums ( egullet.org and lthforum.com for two) reading about food and restaurants. In food as in crafting, I am always up for something new – whether it’s a recipe, an ingredient or technique. I’ve taken to keeping a kitchen journal because I can never remember where I find things and if I don’t keep track, it’s unlikely I’ll be able to find it again! I have two large bookcases full of cookbooks, a huge excel file of recipes to try, and more baking pans than you can shake a stick at. My if-I-win-the-lottery dream is to quit my job, attend the French Pastry School, blow out the side of our house to expand our tiny kitchen into a larger one, and build a wood burning bread and pizza oven in the back yard.

5. What quilt or item you've made are you most proud of and why?
My sister and I played softball for many years, and my mom started hand piecing a queen sized grandmothers fan for their bedroom while sitting at countless softball games.

We moved, they re-decorated their room, and the quilt was shelved. I secretly rescued it a few years ago and made her a lap quilt with some of her completed blocks. I used a few for a charity quilt, and used the unsewn triangles for my wonky log cabin that I have yet to finish. I have several original pieced blocks remaining to make a quilt for my niece. I’m proud to have given her old project new life in so many ways.

6. Who inspires you most in your quilting?

I think, like most of us, I draw inspiration from many places, mostly blogs and the quilting community online. I tend to like traditional things done with a modern twist and spend as much or more time contemplating what I want to do than actually doing it sometimes! I rarely make something just to make it, which means I am one of those odd quilters who doesn’t have a huge stash. I want each quilt to have meaning and relevance and I look to the person it is for to give me inspiration. When making baby quilts, I try to be inspired by the parents’ plan for the nursery décor as well as their personalities.

The Pillowcase Queens!!

The activity at the last meeting of the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild was making pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer and the 1,000,000 pillowcase challenge. And wow, did we ever make pillowcases!!

Jennie and Ebony de-stashed fabric and were happy to donate a total of 95 pillowcase kits for the cause. Several other members contributed fabric too, and we had a real fun pillowcase making party!

First up, Vicki showed us all how to make pillowcases using the "hot dog" method. It's really cool because all the seams end up completely enclosed- no fraying or need to serge!

Then, we really got rolling!! Some ladies rolled and pinned pillowcases, some ladies worked the irons, some ladies turned the pillowcases, and some ladies (like Michele above) worked their sewing machines to the max!

End result?

73 pillowcases! You read that right- 73 pillowcases assembled and ready to go to children and teenagers dealing with cancer or other illnesses.

It was an AMAZING day and we had a lot of fun!!

Meet the Members--Sue R, Treasurer

1. Tell us about you: Name, Location, etc.

Sue R: I am a lifelong South sider (yep..a major Sox fan) I have been teaching for the Chicago Public Schools for twenty years, most recently as a kindergarten teacher. I have been married to Charlie for 32 years. We have three fabulous daughters, Brenna (30), Kerry (27), and Meara (25).

2. When/How did you get into quilting?

I’m not sure why, but quilting just crept into my consciousness through the years. I have a very dear friend who lives in Wisconsin (quilt country) and when I would visit her during the summers I would see books on quilting. I was so attracted to the color and designs….Finally, in 2002, I got a sewing machine when my youngest daughter took a clothing class in high school and I learned to operate the machine and made my first quilt. It was a wonky Jan Mullen quilt pattern. I was also very influenced by Gwen Marston and liberated quilting. Soon after I took a basic quilt making class with Mickey Depre at a local college. I have also taken a class in hand quilting and free motion quilting.

3. Show us a couple of your projects

The pictures include a colorful contemporary shape quilt for my kindergarten;

a whimsical raw-edge appliqué fish wallhanging;

a baby quilt of liberated stars a al Gwen Marston;

a batik sunflower appliqué quilt;

a quilt made with charm packs and Kona cotton solids and the ever present black and white fabric.

4. What (if any) other crafty activities do you enjoy?

I enjoy making bags and crazy T-shirt appliqué. I also enjoy mixed media creations! Paper, fabric, paint, collage etc. I like to create…just play! I’m not good at following patterns and precise directions…

5. What quilt are you most proud of and why?

I have given away 98% of the quilts I have made..but I keep wall hangings for me! So I guess I like my wall hangings the most!

6. Who inspires you most in your quilting?

The Gees Bend and other African American quilts inspire me the most. I like the bold design, color, and surprises! They are visually exciting. I’m fond of bright “busy” quilts!

Meet the Members--Ebony L, Program Committee Chair

1. Tell us about you!
Hi! I'm Ebony and like Jennie, I live in the far northwest suburbs of Illinois, up near Six Flags. I characterize my day job as allowing me to be a "social butterfly" - I work in information technology, but my role involves building relationships between the business folks & the techies to solve business challenges. Since that's pretty fuzzy... let's just say I'm a fabric addict who works to support her quilting habit. :)

2. When/How did you get into quilting?
I got into quilting in a bit of a roundabout way... my sewing background is in garment & accessories construction - specializing in evening gowns. Well, once you make a few of those, you end up with these odd-shaped pieces of really fabulous fabric, and I couldn't bring myself to throw them away. So I started stashing fabric scraps from my creations... eventually I got to the point where I was collecting more fabulous fabric than I could handle, which leads to the need to do something with it... and my quilting career started.

3. Show us a couple of your projects.

This is a baby quilt that I was commissioned to make... it was for a couple expecting the birth of their firstborn son, but they hadn't chosen a nursery theme yet. When I make baby quilts, I tend not to use a lot of pastels!

This is another commissioned project - it was a lot of fun making a Bargello quilt, and also doing a continuous work in separate panels. This is hanging in Madison, WI in a private collection.

This is an example of what happens when I get tired of working on a particular project. I'd been working on an abstract wall hanging made from old pants that had been donated to a garage sale. The wall hanging was about halfway done, and I couldn't picture myself finishing it. So I chopped it up and made two giant tote bags!

4. What (if any) other crafty activities do you enjoy?
In addition to quilting I also crochet & bake, but I think my most favorite crafty activity is designing & making handbags. Sometimes the quilting leaks into this, but for the most part I do not make a lot of quilted bags. Go figure! I also am a staff writer for HandmadeNews.org where I publish a series about quilting, and I also write for my own blog.

5. What quilt or item you've made are you most proud of and why?
Before last week, I would have selected a totally different item, but I think right now, I am totally in love with my interpretation of a 35mm film canister and film strip, using a vacation I took back in 2000 as the inspiration. (It's something I recently completed for Project Quilting.)

6. Who inspires you most in your quilting?
I don't think I can narrow this down to any one individual. I am inspired daily by the people I meet, the objects that I see, the places I go, and the things I experience. I also am amazed at other quilters and artists who are out there, and just the sheer ingenuity that people have. It's fascinating how you can cut up something & stitch it back together again, but the number of combinations & possibilities are endless!

1. Tell us about you!

Hi! I'm Jennie, and I live in the far {very, very far!} northwest suburbs of Chicago! I'm married to a wonderful man and we have a spoiled rotten cat :)

2. When/How did you get into quilting?

I became interested in quilting when my mother-in-law was getting rid of some of her old fabric. She gave it to me, and I borrowed her sewing machine and made the ugliest quilt you've ever seen :) But I was hooked, and later that year I took classes at a local quilt shop. That was about 6 years ago.

3. Show us a couple of your projects

This is my favorite quilt ever! I use this quilt when I'm sad, cold, sick, watching a movie... it's kind of like the security blanket Linus has in Peanuts :)

This miniature is free hand cut and "leaded" with bias tape. It's a really fun technique!

4. What (if any) other crafty activites do you enjoy?

I enjoy knitting and making cards. I mostly knit socks. I love knitting socks!

5. what quilt or item you've made are you most proud of and why?

Right now, I'm most pround of the new window treatments I made for my bedroom! The Roman shades are so fun and easy to make!

6. who inspires you most in your quilting?

I'm really inspired by all of my online friends!! There is an amazing online community of quilters with blogs, on Flickr and at Twitter. They have amazing talents and I just love logging in to Flickr and seeing new pictures posted there every day :)

Each week we'll feature a member, including some pictures of their quilts. We'll start with the officers of our guild but quickly move on to other members. Two Guild Members Win Top Prizes in Project Quilting

Project Quilting, a challenge-based biweekly online quilt competition, recently ended another round of competition. When the challenge ended on Friday, Karen Kells and Ebony Love took top prizes as the winners of the public vote & judges' vote respectively.

The challenge was to start with fifty 3"x5" rectangles of any fabric, paired with no more than two 1/2 yard cuts of other fabric, to create a finished quilt in 7 days.

Karen took a creative spin on the challenge and combined her love of quilting and scrapbooking to create this fabulous quilted scrapbook, complete with family pictures:

Ebony dared herself to cut into some cherished pieces of Thai silk taffeta, try 5 new techniques (including overcasting the edges instead of traditional binding), and came up with this lovely asymmetrical wall hanging:

May Meeting--Workshop on COLOR!

This Sunday May 16th, 2-5pm at the Park District of Forest Park, Building 4.

We'll be doing our show and tell (bring your ticker tape quilts!), a color workshop, and beginning our ICE exchange (read more below). It'll be a super fun meeting.

For the Color Workshop, Ebony is requesting that you do/bring the following:

1) Look at your fabric stash by color. Is there any particular color
that dominates? How would you describe your stash color-wise? Is it vibrant,
calming, bright, subdued? Are there colors you don't have very much of? Why?
2) Bring a chunk of your favorite fabric to the workshop (you don't
have to cut it if it isn't cut already, and we won't hack into it during the
workshop, so don't worry!)
3) Bring a quilt you made (or a picture of a quilt you made) where you
are pleased with the color scheme that you chose.
4) Bring a lead pencil.

Also, the ICE challenge will be beginning. The information is below. See you there!

The Preparation:

Choose 4 fat quarters.

Make 1 quilt block of your choosing from those fat quarters.

Place all of the above in a bag labeled with your name, email address, home address, phone number. (blog info optional)

At the May meeting if you bring a bag, your name will be put into a hat. You will choose from the hat a name of the person whose bag you will take home. You cannot go home with your own bag. Be sure to keep the name and info of the person whose bag you have, you will need this for the return.

If you bring a bag, you get a partner.

The Challenge:

Make a mini wall quilt for your partner using the items from the bag.

You must use all 4 fabrics from the bag in the quilt.

You may add fabrics from your own stash.

Take your inspiration from the given quilt square.

Have fun and be creative!

The Return:

Bring the completed mini wall quilt to the July meeting.

We will have a show and tell of all the quilts, after which you will gift the quilt to the person whose bag you chose.

If you are unable to attend the July meeting, please arrange to deliver the quilt to your partner by mail or in person, or have someone bring it to the meeting for you.

April Meeting- Ticker Tape Quilts With Angela!

Our meeting this past Sunday featured Angela, who blogs over at My Three Sons. She came in to show us her hints and tips for Crazy Mom Quilt's ticker tape technique!

We all brought scraps of fabric to share, so there was an amazing variety to choose from. Here we all are, picking through the pile and choosing our treasures :)

After that, it was time to play! We each brought in a piece of background fabric and a glue stick to make our own ticker tape mini quilts.
